Resilience is the foundational pillar of all else. If your child has resiliency, they will have the ability to face and get through challenges. This will give them the core basis and sufficient capacity to bring their authentic self into situations. And finally, having strong resiliency will give them the space to let their entrepreneurial spirit shine.
There are many varying definitions of resilience, however, there are common key components and themes spanning these including the child’s ability to deal with stress, conflict, failure, and challenges. Beyond Blue has a great definition of resilience in children as “a child’s ability to cope with ups and downs, and to bounce back from the challenges they experience during childhood – for example moving home, changing schools, studying for an exam or dealing with the death of a loved one”.
If your child has a sense of security and belonging, and high levels of self-esteem and self-confidence, research shows they will have improved resiliency and be able to better cope with life. Developing resiliency is critical to ensuring your child is comfortable and able to take healthy risks, because they are not afraid of failure, and they are inquisitive and trust in their own ability to solve problems.
Resilience, self-identity, self-esteem, and a sense of security lead to children feeling positive about themselves. The development of resilience is helpful for your child to deal with stressful situations, such as moving to a new school, taking tests, dealing with bullying, and coping with grief and separation of parents/carers.
Coping skills and positive life experiences are key to the development of resilience. The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University states that, over time, the cumulative impact of positive life experiences and coping skills can shift the balance point, making it easier to achieve positive outcomes. These are not skills that we are born with, instead, they are skills we learn and develop over time with practice. This is why it is so critical that children have the opportunity and support to develop these skills early in life.
